The Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher
An article in the Guardian entitled "A Thatcher state funeral would be bound to lead to protests". Meanwhile Hollywood is preparing to rewrite her legacy with a movie starring Meryl Streep as The Iron Lady. Here we go... Protests is putting it mildly. The right wing's attempts to paint a pretty picture of Thatcher will fail, we have not forgotten and we will not forget. I have compassion for her because that's my path but in my humble opinion she's basically evil. I'm talking cartoon villain with real blood on her hands evil. Seriously. I had to say, "She's not a heroine, she's a selfish posh cow. I say this with compassion." My aunt reminded me, Not even posh Kev, just 'pretend posh cow.' Oh yeah, her dad had a market stall didn't he? Must have resented her background as she started a class war. According to the not infallible wikipedia she "served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. During her time as prime minister, Thatcher's strict conservative policies, hard line against trade unions and tough rhetoric in opposition to the Soviet Union earned her the nickname the "Iron Lady"" The Guradian article continues "The Tory prime minister wasn't a great leader. She was the most socially destructive British politician of our times... The Tory London mayor, Boris Johnson, complained that Thatcher's name had become a "boo-word", a "shorthand for selfishness and me-firstism". Yes, a selfish posh cow. But here I am being judgmental and classist, I'm a rare middleclass rapper as it is, I shouldn't judge. But lets just hear the facts before I start dismantling the reputation that the right wing media campaign is trying to recreate... (thanks again Guardian, you make my life easier) "Not only in former mining communities and industrial areas laid waste by her government, but across Britain Thatcher is still hated for the damage she inflicted – and for her political legacy of rampant inequality and greed, privatisation and social breakdown. Now protests are taking the form of satirical e-petitions for the funeral to be privatised: if it goes ahead, there are likely to be protests and demonstrations. This is a politician, after all, who never won the votes of more than a third of the electorate; destroyed communities; created mass unemployment; deindustrialised Britain; redistributed from poor to rich; and, by her deregulation of the City, laid the basis for the crisis that has engulfed us 25 years later." Now for years there have been facebook pages with titles like "I will pay for a state funeral for Thatcher when she is buried alive" and such like. Hilarious but wrong and bad taste. Okay, I admit, I was a member. Ignore that! On the real, that was a mistake on a personal level, as amusing as it was I do not wish ill on anyone, even her. Okay, I admit, I have done, and may do so again but I shouldn't! But recently the new internet meme is the privatisation of Thatcher's funeral. Better taste, wittier and fitting for the woman who began the destruction of our country (while making a handful of people rich) through privatisation. Excellent. I have had to get used to my opinions becoming popular. The main ethos of the occupy movement, that an 'elite' owns the banks and the media and is squeezing the population dry, I've been saying that for years but slowly people have stopped calling me crazy or telling me to shut up. First I found likem, inded truth seekers then the whole planet took a unified stand. But my opinion of Thatcher has always been popular, or rather she has always been unpopular. So blatant was the damage she did and so blatant was her disregard for human condition that she became an easy target. But this is not a 'bandwagon' of hate. This is not like the unjustified insults of Justin Beiber, I am not insulting her for no reason and I am really trying to maintain compassion for her despite my feelings. But I am aware. I could see what happened even when I was a ten year old in 1990 and I can see what the mainstream media is trying to do to her legacy. I will do everything I can to remind people her policies destroyed whole towns. I had a friend with a drug problem at uni, he told me there were no hard drugs in his home town before Thatcher destroyed industry. He was from Barnesly, an old mining town. The mines shut down and heroin moved in fast. I can't blame her for the decisions he made, but I wonder what he would have been if there was more hope and less heroin in that town. Families and cities were torn apart by her policies and she ironically seemed completely devoid of compassion. I am not supporting dancing on her grave and I am not jumping on a bandwagon, in fact I'm so independent I feel insulted at the idea. I have had similar feelings since I was 17 years old and my A-Level politics teacher claimed that 'She' started a war with the Argentines just to drum up patriotic support before an election. Sounds like a crazy conspiracy theory, right? I repeat my A-Level politics teacher said that. Even without that she did not care about poor people AT ALL. That is why the posh jokes are relevant. Jumping on popular bandwagons is not what I do. She was pretty much evil and remorseless with it. I will not sit back and watch the mainstream media make her out to be a hero. I try, TRY, to wish her no harm... may all beings in all worlds be happy (om lokah samasta sukinho bhavantu...) Maybe as long as ten years ago I was watching the news and a political commentator described Thatcher as one of the greatest Prime Minister's we've ever had. I nearly shouted at the screen. The newscaster immediately questioned him and reminded him of the riots. But I had a sudden realisation, it's people like that d*** that get to write history books. Well while my path in this lifetime is to preach my subjective truth (don't even think about lecturing me on the subjectivity of truth, that's been my field since I was 12 and I'm a philosophy grad) and while I have the energy to do so I will assist the millions of people who want to see justice done and the truth be shown. I would protest the ****ing movie first if I didn't have more important issues but billions of sheeple with their third eyes shut watch movies and don't read, this is cultural brainwashing. I see, at least I believe I see the plan, and I do not like it. However hating Margaret Thatcher doesn't help anyone. I refuse to sit back and let the media make her out to be an anti-heroine but I do not know her and even if I'm completely right about her selfish motivations that selfishness probably stems from a dark place that ultimately needs compassion. But it ain't easy! Thatcher may have been a puppet of stronger forces, she may have thought she was doing the right thing, she may have had a dark and difficult childhood and I may simply be wrong! I can accept that. I am not attached to that. But my identity as an independent thinker, yes, I admit I didn't realise how important that was to me and I will try not to be so venomously attached to that aspect of my ego. I can usually admit when I'm wrong. But to the best of my limited knowledge Margaret Thatcher was an evil class war waging selfish horror of a woman and I do not hold this opinion merely because it is popular. I hope to forgive her and I hope to forgive myself for judging her. Feel free to send Thatcher love, I will try but only in the knowledge that even evil selfish politicians need love, probably more than most. I will meditate on sending her compassion but that doesn't mean I don't think shes evil. Inhale, exhale. Inner peace x -- Gratitude and appreciation ? ? ???????? ? ?
